I have a question for you

It's been crazier than usual around here, and I really need to post, but for now, I would just like to pose a question that I have been asking myself often.

Sister Hazel's Swan Dive has these lyrics:

And oh yeah well I might be crazy -
But that’s not the same as insane
And I’m scared -
But that’s not the same as being afraid

So what do you think? Is "scared" the same as "being afraid?" If not, what's the distinction? Discuss.

Comments

Well, I don't know what Sister Hazel intended (although I would agree that crazy and insane are in different spots on the spectrum). But I think you could interpret being afraid as having fear or uncertainty, while being scared is running away from something.

Or, Sister Hazel could be both crazy and insane, because scared and afraid seem pretty similar to me.

Who in the heck is Sister Hazel?

I personally think she was working more for the similarity in phrasing than actual truth... but that is not nearly as fun to talk about.

Wiktionary (which is perhaps the WORST source imaginable) actually defines scared as afraid, so if we believe IT... then Sister Hazel is just plane batty.

But if we want to get REALLY contemplative, it might become obvious that I really wanted to just say Howdy, and I am thorwing out a lot of words to make myself look like I am writing something worthwhile.

Smiles to you and Mattchew....

Mocha! All self-respecting fans of Southern Rock and just plain great music need to know Sister Hazel. Get on it. Hint: it's a "they," not a "she." :) And yes, I think they might be a little batty.

Photo - that's what I generally arrive at, that "scared" is "afraid, with action."

The point is that I can't listen to this (or most any) song without analyzing.
As I was making a road trip CD last night (formerly known as a mix tape), I was inspired to include some Sister Hazel. Thanks for the inspiration. (And hope you don't mind that they are joining Green Day and Matchbox 20. I never said I have sophisticated taste, okay?)

Photoqueen, I am so excited about your roadtrip! And your selection of music! The guys from Sister Hazel actually joked about Matchbox 20 at the show we saw on Monday, so it's funny that you bring them up, and put them on the same mix tape. :) Have a great trip!
