Entertaining
We are wrapping up a week of Good Old Fashioned Family Entertainment here in the AmyWrites household. I was planning to write about the first episode, but the hits just kept on coming, so here is, now, a recap of some solidly entertaining chunks of time.
Friday: Dan in Real Life.
This film had so much going for it (Steve Carrell) straight out of the box that it would have had to work really hard to let us down. Refreshingly wholesome, completely family-friendly, it's one of those that you can recommend without disclaimers. And it contains one of the greatest lines ever uttered by a teenage movie character. If you've seen it, I'll let you guess to which one I am referring.
Saturday: Annie
Okay, I already wrote about this one, but it's not every week that I get to see TWO stage shows within a few days of each other.
Sunday: 9:30 Service
Are we not entertained? Come on, we had a revival break out during the southern gospel number.
Sunday Night: The Martian Child
Tell me, have you EVER seen anything with John Cusack that has not been - at least - entertaining? Yes, some of them cause your brain to hurt a bit, and I hear some of them are scary, but John Cusack is fun to watch. I think it's because he's so natural that you forget you're watching someone act. Okay so he's kind of the same character in every movie, but it works for him. Anyway, this is a sweet love story between a father and his adopted son - demonstrating the beauty of just making up your mind to love someone who is difficult to love.
Tuesday Night: Wicked
Wicked had been on our list since it dominated the Tony Awards a few years ago and this was finally our week! As you may remember, my love for musical theater runs deep so this was exciting on many levels. Level 1: A show I hadn't seen before. Hooray! What fun. Level 2: A tremendous story with wonderful characters. Level 3: Challenged my entire worldview concerning the Wizard of Oz and his relation to Glinda and The Wicked Witch of the West. Level 4: DEEDEE FROM THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB WAS IN IT!!! a-mickey mouse rocks the house, a-mickey mickey mickey mouse rocks the house, a-mickey, a-mickey mouse...
Show was great, highly recommend selling your firstborn to see it. We'll miss ours...
Wednesday Night: Enchanted
This one was picked up on a recommendation from Loren, who praised its cleverness, and it turns out he was right! If there's anything funnier than other movies making fun of Disney movies, it's Disney making fun of their own movies. This was visually very fun and endearingly campy - no better word for it than: entertaining. I was a little disappointed that Patrick Dempsey's character (a divorce lawyer) was so bent on explaining that all relationships end in divorce - resulting in a two or three year window between now and when we let our kids see it.
And now, the sobering part: apparently, we spent too much time this week "entertaining" ourselves. Wonder what difference we could have made had we used that time "wisely"?
